The coronavirus (COVID-19) now completely grips the Netherlands and directly affects the way people work. For example, many offices have closed their doors or people are working from home as much as possible. Universities are no longer giving live classes and lectures have been turned into webinars. This is having a huge impact on technology as people start working mostly from home. We would like to tell you how you can do this in a safe way.

Make sure your home computer is properly secured

We could write books full of books about security, but in essence it is important that your computer is up to date and has good antivirus software. That already lays the foundation for good security. Updates are necessary because the developers have fixed bugs in the programs, so you are better protected against malicious people. As the name suggests, antivirus software ensures that you are as protected as possible against viruses.

Set 2fa/MFA (not as scary as it sounds!)

You may have heard us talk about it before: 2fa (two factor authentication) or MFA (multi factor authenticator). It involves you having two ways of identification when logging in. In addition to your username and password, you receive a code on an app in your smartphone that you have to enter to log in. This way, people who only captured your username and password still can't log in. Much safer than just your username (often your e-mail) and password (your rabbit's name or something else predictable)! We use the Microsoft Authenticator for this.

Don't trust all the 'corona trackers' out there

Hackers keep hacking whether a pandemic (global epidemic) has broken out or not. Some malicious people are taking advantage of the opportunity and panic by putting viruses into corona trackers. So when you look at a map or download a file to see how the corona virus spreads, you get a virus on your computer. Be alert to this! We ourselves use these three websites:

  1. https://bing.com/covid = Microsoft's global tracker on infections
  2. https://rijksoverheid.nl/coronavirus = Official website of the central government
  3. https://rivm.nl/coronavirus = Official website about from the RIVM

Stay hygienic

Corona is incredibly contagious, so it is important to pay close attention to your hygiene when working from home. For example, disinfect your computer and other devices (phone, tablet, et cetera) regularly. Sneeze into your elbow and wash it immediately afterwards. Do not touch your face with your hands and keep a meter and a half away from others.
